ಅಷ್ಟತ್ರಿಂಶಸ್ಸರ್ಗಃ
( ಸಗರಸ್ಯ ಕಥಃ )

ತಾಂ ಕಥಾಂ ಕೌಶಿಕೋ ರಾಮೇ ನಿವೇದ್ಯ ಕುಶಿಕಾತ್ಮಜಃ |
ಪುನರೇವಾಪರಂ ವಾಕ್ಯಂ ಕಾಕುತ್ ಸ್ಥಮ್ ಇದಮಬ್ರವೀತ್ ||

ಸ || ಕೌಸಿಕೋ ರಾಮೇ ತಾಂ ಕಥಾಂ ನಿವೇದ್ಯ , ಪುನರೇವ (ಸಃ) ಕುಶಿಕಾತ್ಮಜಃ ಇದಂ ವಾಕ್ಯಂ ಕಾಕುತ್ ಸ್ಥಮ್ ಅಬ್ರವೀತ್ |

That son of Kusa having told the story to Rama , again he further told the following to that scion of Kakutstha.

ಅಯೋಧ್ಯಾಪತಿಃ ಶೂರಃ ಪೂರ್ವಮಾಸೀನ್ನರಾಧಿಪಃ |
ಸಗರೋ ನಾಮ ಧರ್ಮಾತ್ಮಾ ಪ್ರಜಾಕಾಮಸ್ಸಚಾಪ್ರಜಃ ||

ಸ|| ಪೂರ್ವಂ ಸಗರೋ ನಾಮ ಧರ್ಮಾತ್ಮಾ ಶೂರಃ ನರಾಧಿಪಃ ಅಯೋಧ್ಯಾಪತಿಃ ಅಸೀತ್ . (ಸಃ) ಪ್ರಜಾ ಕಾಮಃ ಅಪ್ರಜಾ ( ಆಸೀತ್)
'In the olden times there was a leader of men, follower of righteous path, and a warrior by name Sagara who was the king of Ayodhya. he is desirous of progeny and did not have any children'.

ವೈದರ್ಭದುಹಿತಾ ರಾಮ ಕೇಶಿನೀ ನಾಮ ನಾಮತಃ |
ಜ್ಯೇಷ್ಠಾ ಸಗರಪತ್ನೀ ಸಾ ಧರ್ಮಿಷ್ಠಾ ಸತ್ಯವಾದಿನೀ ||

ಸ|| (ಹೇ) ರಾಮ ಕೇಶಿನೀ ನಾಮ ನಾಮತಃ ವೈದರ್ಭ ದುಹಿತಾ ಜ್ಯೇಷ್ಠಾ ಸಗರ ಪತ್ನೀ ( ಆಸೀತ್) . ಸಾ ಧರ್ಮಿಷ್ಠಾ ಸತ್ಯವಾದಿನೀ ( ಅಪಿ)

'Oh Rama ! The daughter of Vidarbha by name Kesini was the Eldest wife of Sagara. She is the follower of righteous path and truth."

ಅರಿಷ್ಟನೇಮಿ ದುಹಿತಾ ರೂಪೇಣಾಪ್ರತಿಮಾ ಭುವಿ|
ದ್ವಿತೀಯಾ ಸಗರಸ್ಯಾಸೀತ್ ಪತ್ನೀ ಸುಮತಿ ಸಂಜ್ಞಿತಾ ||

ಸ|| ಸುಮತಿ ಸಂಜ್ಞಿತಾ ರೂಪೇಣಾ ಪ್ರತಿಮಾಭುವಿ ಅರಿಷ್ಠನೇಮಿ ದುಹಿತಾ ಸಗರಸ್ಯ ದ್ವಿತೀಯ ಪತ್ನೀಆಸೀತ್ ||

"Arishtanemi , with an excellent mind, who knows everything and who is of a form unmatched on the earth is the second wife of Sagara".

ತಾಭ್ಯಾಂ ಸಹ ತತೋ ರಾಜಾ ಪತ್ನೀಭ್ಯಾಂ ತಪ್ತವಾಂ ಸ್ತಪಃ |
ಹಿಮವಂತಂ ಸಮಾಸಾದ್ಯ್ ಭೃಗುಪ್ರಸ್ರವಣೇ ಗಿರೌ ||

ಸ|| ತತೋ ರಾಜಾ ಪತ್ನೀಭ್ಯಾಂ ಸಹ ಹಿಮವಂತಮ್ ಸಮಸಾದ್ಯ ಭೃಗುಪ್ರಸ್ರವಣೇ ಗಿರೌ ಸಃ ತಾಭ್ಯಾಂ ತಪಃ ತಪ್ತವಾಂ ||

"That king along with his wives went to Brighu hermitage in the Himalayas and performed penance on the top of that hill".

ಅಥ ವರ್ಷ ಶತೇ ಪೂರ್ಣೇ ತಪಸಾರಾಧಿತೋ ಮುನಿಃ |
ಸಗರಾಯ ವರಂ ಪ್ರಾದಾತ್ ಭೃಗು ಸ್ಸತ್ಯವತಾಂ ವರಃ ||

ಸ|| ಅಥ ವರ್ಷ ಶತೇ ಪೂರ್ಣೇ ಭೃಗುಃ ಆರಾಧಿತೋ ( ಸಃ) ಮುನಿಃ ಸ್ಸತ್ಯವತಾಂ ವರಃ, ಸಗರಾಯ ವರಂ ಪ್ರಾದಾತ್ |

"For hundred years they worshipped the venerable sage Brighu. That venerable sage best among followers of truth gave a boon to Sagara"

ಅಪತ್ಯಲಾಭ ಸ್ಸುಮಹಾನ್ ಭವಿಷ್ಯತಿ ತವಾನಘ |
ಕೀರ್ತಿಂ ಚಾಪ್ರತಿಮಂ ಲೋಕೇ ಪ್ರಾಪ್ಯಸೇ ಪುರುಷರ್ಷಭ ||

ಸ|| ಅನಘ ತವ ಸುಮಹಾನ್ ಅಪತ್ಯಲಾಭಃ ಭವಿಷ್ಯತಿ | ಪುರುಷರ್ಷಭ ಅಪ್ರತಿಮಂಚಾಪಿ ಕೀರ್ತಿಂ ಪ್ರಾಪ್ಯಸೇ ||

"Oh Anagha! you will have many children . Oh Best of men ! You wil also attain unmatched fame ."

ಏಕಾ ಜನಯಿತಾ ತಾತ ಪುತ್ತ್ರಂ ವಂಶಕರಂ ತವ |
ಷಷ್ಟಿಂ ಪುತ್ತ್ರ ಸಹಸ್ರಾಣಿ ಅಪರಾ ಜನಯಿಷ್ಯತಿ ||

ಸ|| ತಾತ ಏಕಾ ಜನಯಿಷ್ಯತಿ ತವ ವಂಶಕರಂ ಪುತ್ರಂ | ಅಪರಾ ಷಷ್ಠಿಂ ಸಹಸ್ರ ಪುತ್ರಾಣಿ ಜನಯಿಷ್ಯತಿ ||

" Dear son ! One wife will give birth to a son who will uphold the family prestige . The other wife will have sixty thousand children."

ಭಾಷಮಾಣಂ ಮಹಾತ್ಮಾನಂ ರಾಜಪುತ್ರ್ಯೌ ಪ್ರಸಾದ್ಯ ತಮ್ |
ಊಚತುಃ ಪರಮಪ್ರೀತೇ ಕೃತಾಂಜಲಿಪುಟೇ ತದಾ ||

ಸ|| ತಮ್ ಭಾಷಮಾಣಂ ಮಹಾತ್ಮಾನಂ ಪ್ರಸಾದ್ಯ , ಪರಮಪ್ರೀತೇ ಕೃತಾಂಜಲಿ ಪುಟೇ ರಾಜಪುತ್ರ್ಯೌ ಊಚತುಃ ||

'Pleasing the venerable sage who told as above , the two princesses bowed down to him and spoke to him with folded hands.'

ಏಕಃ ಕಸ್ಯಾಸ್ಸುತೋ ಬ್ರಹ್ಮನ್ ಕಾ ಬಹೂನ್ ಜನಯಿಷ್ಯತಿ |
ಶ್ರೋತುಮಿಚ್ಛಾವಹೇ ಬ್ರಹ್ಮನ್ ಸತ್ಯಮಸ್ತು ವಚಸ್ತವ ||

ಸ||ಬ್ರಹ್ಮನ್ ಕಃ ಏಕಃ ಸುತೋ ಸ್ಯಾತ್ , ಕಾ ಬಹೂನ್ ಜನಯಿಷ್ಯತಿ ಶ್ರೋತುಂ ಇಚ್ಛಾವಹೇ | ತವ ವಚನಂ ಸತ್ಯಮಸ್ತು ||

" O Brahman ! Who will get the one son ? Who will get many sons ? We are desirous of hearing the same ? May your words be always truthful"

ತಯೋಸ್ತದ್ವಚನಂ ಶ್ರುತ್ವಾ ಭೃಗುಃ ಪರಮಧಾರ್ಮಿಕಃ |
ಉವಾಚ ಪರಮಾಂ ವಾಣೀಂ ಸ್ವಚ್ಛಂದೋs ತ್ರ ವಿಧೀಯತಾಮ್ ||

ಸ||ತಯೋಃ ತತ್ ವಚನಂ ಶ್ರುತ್ವಾ ಭೃಗುಃ ಪರಮಧಾರ್ಮಿಕಃ ಉವಾಚ , ಅತ್ರ ಪರಮಾಂ ವಾಣೀಂ ಸ್ವಚ್ಚಂದೋ ವಿಧೀಯತಾಂ ||

Hearing those words of the two princesses , the venerable sage told the following . " Now you may tell what your desire".

ಏಕೋ ವಂಶಕರೋ ವಾಸ್ತು ಬಹವೋ ವಾ ಮಹಾಬಲಾಃ |
ಕೀರ್ತಿಮಂತೋ ಮಹೋತ್ಸಾಹಾ ಕಾ ವಾ ಕಂ ವರಮಿಚ್ಛತಿ ||

ಸ|| ಏಕೋ ಕೀರ್ತಿಮಂತೋ ವಂಶಕರೋ ವಾಸ್ತು ವಾ ಬಹವೋ ಮಹೋತ್ಸಾಹೋ ಕೀರ್ತಿಮಂತೋ ವಾ (ಅಸ್ತು) ಕಂ ವರಮಿಚ್ಛತಿ ||

" The one son will be bring fame and uphold the family name. The many children will be famous and powerful. Which one of you desire whom please let me know."

ಮುನೇಸ್ತು ವಚನಂ ಶ್ರುತ್ವಾ ಕೇಶಿನೀ ರಘುನಂದನ |
ಪುತ್ತ್ರಂ ವಂಶಕರಂ ರಾಮ ಜಗ್ರಾಹ ನೃಪ ಸನ್ನಿಧೌ ||

ಸ|| ರಘುನಂದನಾ ! ಕೇಶಿನೀ ಮುನೇಃ ವಚನಂ ಶ್ರುತ್ವಾ ನೃಪ ಸನ್ನಿಧೌ ಪುತ್ತ್ರಂ ವಂಶಕರಂ ಜಗ್ರಾಹ |

'Oh Ragunandana ! Kesini in the presence of the king having heard the sages words asked for the one son who will uphold the family prestige'

ಷಷ್ಟಿಂ ಪುತ್ತ್ರ ಸಹಸ್ರಾಣಿ ಸುಪರ್ಣಭಗಿನೀ ತದಾ |
ಮಹೋತ್ಸಾಹಾನ್ ಕೀರ್ತಿಮತೋ ಜಗ್ರಾಹ ಸುಮತಿಃ ಸುತಾನ್ ||

ಸ|| ತದಾ ಸುಪರ್ಣ ಭಗಿನೀ ಸುಮತಿಃ ಮಹೋತ್ಸಾಹಾನ್ ಕೀರ್ತಿಮತೋ ಷಷ್ಟಿಂ ಪುತ್ತ್ರ ಸಹಸ್ರಾಣಿ ಸುತಾನ್ ಜಗ್ರಾಹ ||

'Then the sister of Suparna amd the one with excellent mind asked for sixty thousand children who will be famous'.

ಪ್ರದಕ್ಷಿಣಂ ಋಷೀಂ ಕೃತ್ವಾ ಶಿರಸಾ ಭಿ ಪ್ರಣಮ್ಯ ಚ |
ಜಗಾಮ ಸ್ವಪುರಂ ರಾಜಾ ಸಭಾರ್ಯೋ ರಘುನಂದನ ||

ಸ|| ರಘುನಂದನ ! ರಾಜಾ ಸಭಾರ್ಯೋ ಋಷೀಂ ಶಿರಸಾಭಿ ಪ್ರಣಮ್ಯ ಪ್ರದಕ್ಷಿಣಂ ಕೃತ್ವಾ ಸ್ವಪುರಂ ಜಗಾಮ ||

'Oh Raghunandana ! The king then bowed down with his head as mark of respect and after circumbulating the venerable sage went to his own city.'

ಅಥ ಕಾಲೇ ಗತೇ ತಸ್ಮಿನ್ ಜ್ಯೇಷ್ಠಾಪುತ್ರಂ ವ್ಯಜಾಯತ |
ಅಸಮಂಜ ಇತಿ ಖ್ಯಾತಂ ಕೇಶಿನೀ ಸಗರಾತ್ಮಜಂ ||

ಸ|| ಅಥ ಕಾಲೇ ಗತೇ ಕೇಶಿನೀ ಜ್ಯೇಷ್ಠಾ ಅಸಮಂಜ ಇತಿ ಖ್ಯಾತಂ ಸಗರಾತ್ಮಜಂ ಪುತ್ರಂ ವ್ಯಜಾಯತ ||

' After some time the eldest wife Kesini gave birth to a son of Sagara by name Asamamjasa.'

ಸುಮತಿಸ್ತು ನರವ್ಯಾಘ್ರ ಗರ್ಭತುಂಬಂ ವ್ಯಜಾಯತ |
ಷಷ್ಟಿಃ ಪುತ್ತ್ರಾ ಸಹಸ್ರಾಣಿ ತುಂಬಭೇಧಾದ್ವಿನಿಸ್ಸೃತಃ ||

ಸ|| (ಹೇ) ನರವ್ಯಾಘ್ರ ! ಸುಮತಿಸ್ತು ಗರ್ಭತುಂಭಂ ವ್ಯಜಾಯತ | ತುಂಭ ಭೇದಾತ್ ಷಷ್ಠಿಃ ಸಹಸ್ರ ಪುತ್ರಾಣಿ ವಿನಿಶ್ರುತಃ |

'Oh Tiger among men ! Sumati too gave birth to a foetus which is very large. After cutting the large Foetus it is known that sixty thousand chilren were born'.

ಘೃತಪೂರ್ಣೇಷು ಕುಂಭೇಷು ಧಾತ್ರ್ಯಸ್ತಾನ್ ಸಮವರ್ಧಯನ್ |
ಕಾಲೇನ ಮಹತಾ ಸರ್ವೇ ಯೌವನಂ ಪ್ರತಿಪೇದಿರೇ ||

ಸ|| ಧಾತ್ರ್ಯಃ ತಾನ್ ಘೃತಪೂರ್ಣೇಷು ಕುಂಭೇಷು ಸಮವರ್ಥಯನ್ | ಸರ್ವೇ ಕಾಲೇನ ಮಹತಾ ಯೌವನಂ ಪ್ರತಿಪೇದಿರೇ |

'The midwifes brought them up on pots full of ghee . With time they all grew up and reached the stage of youth.'

ಅಥ ದೀರ್ಘೇಣ ಕಾಲೇನ ರೂಪಯೌವನಶಾಲಿನಃ |
ಷಷ್ಟಿಃ ಪುತ್ತ್ರ ಸಹಸ್ರಾಣಿ ಸಗರಸ್ಯಾಭವಂ ಸ್ತದಾ ||

ಸ|| ಅಥ ದೀರ್ಘೇಣ ಕಾಲೇನ ಸಗರಸ್ಯ ಷಷ್ಠಿಃ ಪುತ್ರ ಸಹಸ್ರಾಣಿ ರೂಪಯೌವನಶಾಲಿನಃ ಅಭವಂ ತದಾ |

'After a long time the sixty thousand sons of Sagara attained a stage of youtful form '.

ಸ ಚ ಜ್ಯೇಷ್ಠೋ ನರಶ್ರೇಷ್ಠಃ ಸಗರಸ್ಯಾತ್ಮಸಂಭವಃ |
ಬಾಲಾನ್ ಗೃಹೀತ್ವಾ ತು ಜಲೇ ಸರಯ್ವಾ ರಘುನಂದನ |
ಪ್ರಕ್ಷಿಪ್ಯ ಪ್ರಹಸನ್ ನಿತ್ಯಂ ಮಜ್ಜತಸ್ತಾನ್ ನಿರೀಕ್ಷ್ಯವೈ ||

ಸ|| (ಹೇ) ರಘುನಂದನಾ ! ನರಶ್ರೇಷ್ಠಾ ! ಸಗರಸ್ಯ ಆತ್ಮಸಂಭವಃ ಜ್ಯೇಷ್ಠಃ ಬಾಲಾನ್ ಗೃಹೀತ್ವಾ ಸರಯ್ವಾ ಜಲೇ ಪ್ರಕ್ಷಿಪ್ಯ , ಮಜ್ಜತಃ ತಾನ್ ನಿರೀಕ್ಷ್ಯ ವೈ ಪ್ರಹಸನ್|

' Oh Raghunandana , the best among men ! The eldest son of Sagara would take other children drown them in river Sarayu and would enjoy their tumbling in the river waters'.

ಏವಂ ಪಾಪಸಮಾಚಾರಃ ಸಜ್ಜನಪ್ರತಿಭಾಧಕಃ |
ಪೌರಾಣಾಮಹಿತೇ ಯುಕ್ತಃ ಪುತ್ತ್ರೋ ನಿರ್ವಾಸಿತಃ ಪುರಾತ್ ||

ಸ|| ಏವಂ ಪೌರಾಣಾಮ್ ಅಹಿತೇ ಯುಕ್ತಃ ಪಾಪ ಸಮಾಚಾರಃ ಸಜ್ಜನಪ್ರತಿಭಾಧಕಃ ಪುತ್ರೋ ಪುರಾತ್ ನಿರ್ವಾಸಿತಃ |

'That son who was acting in complete disrgard for the interests of the citizens, who was troubling the good people was banished from the city'.

ತಸ್ಯ ಪುತ್ತ್ರೋಂಶುಮಾನ್ ನಾಮ ಅಸಮಂಜಸ್ಯ ವೀರ್ಯವಾನ್ |
ಸಮ್ಮತಃ ಸರ್ವಲೋಕಸ್ಯ ಸರ್ವಸ್ಯಾಪಿ ಪ್ರಿಯಂ ವದಃ ||

ತಸ್ಯ ಅಸಮಂಜಸ್ಯ ಪುತ್ರಃ ಅಂಶುಮಾನ್ ನಾಮಃ ವೀರ್ಯವಾನ್ ಸರ್ವಲೋಕಸ್ಯ ಸಮ್ಮತಃ | ಸರ್ವಸ್ಯಾಪಿ ಪ್ರಿಯಂ ವದಃ ||

'The son of Asamamjasa is one by name Amsuman. He is a warrior well liked by all in the world and would talk to all in an appropriate way'.

ತತಃ ಕಾಲೇನ ಮಹತಾ ಮತಿ ಸ್ಸಮಭಿಜಾಯತ |
ಸಗರಸ್ಯ ನರಶ್ರೇಷ್ಠ ಯಜೇಯಮಿತಿ ನಿಶ್ಚಿತಾ ||

ಸ|| (ಹೇ) ನರಶ್ರೇಷ್ಠಾ ! ತತಃ ಮಹತಾ ಕಾಲೇನ ಯಜೇಯಮಿತಿ ಸಗರಸ್ಯ ಮತಿ ಸಮಭಿಜಾಯತ ನಿಶ್ಚಿತಾ |

' Oh Best of men ! After some time , Sagara thought in his mind about performing a sacrifice. Then he decided to do the same.

ಸಕೃತ್ವಾ ನಿಶ್ಚಯಂ ರಾಮ ಸೋಪಾಧ್ಯಾಯಗಣ ಸ್ತದಾ |
ಯಜ್ಞಕರ್ಮಣಿ ವೇದಜ್ಞೋ ಯಷ್ಟುಂ ಸಮುಪಚಕ್ರಮೇ ||

ಸ|| ಹೇ ರಾಮ ! ಸ: ನಿಶ್ಚಯಂ ಕೃತ್ವಾ ಸೋಪಧ್ಯಾಗಣೋ ತದಾ ವೇದಜ್ಞೋ ಯಜ್ಞಕರ್ಮಣಿ ಯಷ್ಠುಂ ಸಮುಪಚಕ್ರಮೇ ||

'Oh Rama ! Having decided , he started the sacrificial activities with the help of Gurus and those well versed in Vedas.'

ಇತ್ಯಾರ್ಷೇ ಶ್ರೀಮದ್ರಾಮಾಯಣೇ ವಾಲ್ಮೀಕೀಯೇ ಆದಿಕಾವ್ಯೇ
ಬಾಲಕಾಂಡೇ ಅಷ್ಟತ್ರಿಂಶಸ್ಸರ್ಗಃ ||

|| ವಾಲ್ಮೀಕಿ ವಿರಚಿತ ಆದಿಕಾವ್ಯೇ ಶ್ರೀಮದ್ರಾಮಾಯಣೇ ಬಾಲಕಾಂಡೇ ಅಷ್ಠತ್ರಿಂಶಸ್ಸರ್ಗಃ ಸಮಾಪ್ತಂ ಇತಿ ||
